Our Colleagues | Life at Mercer
A day in the life of Julie Marshall
In our "Day in the life" series we highlight colleagues across the business doing interesting things in and outside of work. Let's follow Julie Marshall, a Business Support Assistant in the Wealth business and an Assistant Cub Scout Leader, as she takes us through her day.
6:30
My day starts with a gentle wake-up call from the radio, although I often don’t hear it until the 7am news! Once I'm up and showered by 7.30, I log on to check for any urgent emails and then it's on to the chore of getting my son up and out of the door for school, who’s 15 and does love his bed! We can see the school from our house, which makes him think he can leave as late as possible!
8:30
By 8.30, I'm ready for my "commute" - a morning walk to clear my head and get some exercise. As a home worker, this is my substitute for a commute - and I do it in all weather conditions. It's only about 1.5 miles, but it helps keep me sane!
9:00
Back at my desk and ready to tackle the day. Today's tasks include merging packs, formatting documents, and rebranding - so much rebranding!
11:00
I join a cuppa and catch up call which I organise to keep in touch with colleagues. It's good to stay connected.
13:00
It’s time for a lunch break. I take a short walk to stretch my legs and give my eyes a rest. Looking at the screen all morning can take its toll. I also use this time to check that I’ve got everything I need for Cubs later this evening - I’m assistant Cub Scout Leader at 1st St John’s, Woking.
They call me Squirrel as that was my name when I helped at Beavers, and I kept it when I moved on to Cubs. I’ve also been an Assistant Scout Leader, Assistant Venture Scout Leader, Assistant Explorer Scout Leader and District Scout Leader! I’ve been volunteering with Scouts for over 30 years now and was awarded my 30-year service award in February, which is something I’m super proud about.

14:00
I have a training session on mail merges. I know how to do them, of course, but it never hurts to refresh your knowledge for next time one comes in.
15:00
My son Charlie gets in from school, gets changed and goes straight out again! He can move quickly when he wants to!
17:00
I usually like to end my work day with another walk, but not today. That's because Thursday is Cubs Day!
17:45
Off to Cubs! Today we’re doing a treasure hunt around The Lye and the Basingstoke Canal. It's a fun evening of map work and problem-solving, and the kids love it. We finish off with a delicious ice cream for everyone who solves the anagram. I’ve had so many memorable evenings like this with Scouts, Beavers and Cubs, and love being part of this community.
That's a typical day in my life: a mix of work, exercise, and Cubs activities, all keeping me busy and engaged. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
